Soul Calibur is the latest installment in a famous weapon-based fighting game franchise. It received a decent amount of fanfare.
Using a refined fighting engine, Bandai Namco’s Soul Calibur VI delivers a rich and entertaining experience. It includes a plethora of single-player modes. There are also new features like Reversal Edge and Soul Charge.
Is Soul Calibur 6 Online or Offline?
Like previous entries in the Soul Calibur series, it consists of weapon-wielding combatants battling each other using 3D gameplay. It features classic fighting mechanics such as 8-Way Run and Guard Impact along with new features like Reversal Edge and Soul Charge.
The game also has a Story Mode called Libra of Soul, taking place during the events of the first Soul Calibur entry. It plays similar to a MUD and has you hop between environments meeting characters, taking up side missions, and fighting in matches that act as significant battles in the plot.
Besides the main cast, Soul Calibur VI includes guest characters like Raphael Sorel (rahuaerusoreru, Rafaeru Soreru) the noble fencer from Soulcalibur II, and the skeleton demon Inferno (inhueruno, Inferuno). There’s also Amy Sorel (eimisoreru, Eimi Soreru), the adopted daughter of Raphael, and Kassandra Alexandra (kasandoraarekusandoru, Kassandra Arekusandoru) who appears as a flashier version of her design in Soulcalibur III – V. NSFW custom characters can be created through the game’s character creator, although Bandai Namco warns of a risk of bans for those who make horny or otherwise inappropriate creations.
Character Creation
One of the coolest things about Soul Calibur is its incredibly detailed character customization suite. From sweeping choices like clothes and face style to minuscule ones like eyebrow thickness and muscle definition, the character creation suite is packed with features to satisfy any user’s desire.
The character creation suite allows players to not only choose a race and gender for their custom character but also how they fight. What’s more, their fighting style will mirror the move set of the main character who wields the weapon they choose.
Of course, it’s not just the game’s characters that can be made, as fans in the community have been creating some of the most amazing character creations ever seen. One Redditor even created a custom Skeletor, for crying out loud!
If you’ve got a few hours to spare, check out some of these incredible custom characters. They’re bound to blow your mind!
Libra of Souls
At Gamescom, BANDAI NAMCO revealed the second Soul Calibur 6 story mode: Libra of Souls. The story takes place across the game map, and as you advance through it you’ll encounter characters from the main story and even the DLC character Tira. You’ll also fight as a custom character in matches that have different rules.
According to Arekkz, you’ll be offered multiple choices that affect the story and tilt your Spirit Scales either toward good or evil. In the end, Groh is buried or expelled from the Conduit by Azwel based on your alignment.
The problem is that Libra of Souls feels like a rushed and underdeveloped mode, with very few interesting modifiers beyond the standard fighting game fare. It’s easy to beat, but it doesn’t feel satisfying or challenging.
Soul Chronicles
With a solid fighting system and interesting story, Soul Calibur VI feels like a return to the franchise’s glory days. It’s worth picking up if you are a fan of the series and have been waiting for a worthy successor to its first two titles.
In the main Soul Chronicle mode, players can revisit the 16th-century events of the first Soul Blade and Soul Calibur games. Players will get to play as characters from both timelines and fight through the legend of the cursed swords.
The story unfolds through illustrated cut scenes and voice acting, unlike Bandai Namco’s other sister title Tekken, which uses live action. Each character’s story is broken down into episodes that contain a few short dialogue sequences and a few fights each. It takes about a couple of hours to clear the main story. Purchasing the DLC also unlocks Setsuka as a playable character in Soul Chronicle, and her story is also available.
